Project "Jules" The Moose
The History:
Moose in the City was a public art display hosted by the City of Toronto in 2000. Organized by then mayor Mel Lastman to increase tourism and art in the city, 326 life-sized moose sculptures were commissioned, decorated by local artists and placed around various locations around Toronto.
Antlers were separate but attached to the moose sculptures. As a result, many were stolen throughout the exhibit. Once vandalism of the moose started, the city started a hotline for moose abuse tips, with messages checked every night.
At the end of the project, the moose were auctioned off, money donated to charity. With the moose now in private hands it became a game to spot them on road trips throughout the province.
We found "Jules" on Facebook Marketplace in rather rough shape and he was clearly in need of a second act. Enter local artist and celebrated muralist Chrissy Poitras of Sparkbox Studio, who lovingly brought him back to life with a fresh, one-of-a-kind makeover inspired by his new home on the flower farm. We even found his original moose antlers donated by a local artist who's mom happened to have displayed one of the moose at her store in Toronto!
Now fully reborn, Jules proudly watches over the back field, keeping an eye on the orchard and the bees and welcoming visitors with his unmistakable charm. He loves having his photo taken — so don’t be shy.
